Last of the Poetry Homework for Hum 8

This will be the last of your Humanities 8 homework:  (I know how sad that must make you!)

By now - everyone should have posted their definition poems and you should have commented on 2 of your peers' definition poems.

Poetry booklet - Continue with your glossing (Poetry analysis like we did in class with "The Universal Soldier" and "One Tin Soldier"), and also try to figure out the tone and message of the poet.  Remember to resist the urge to look up the meaning of the poem online and use your "noggin" *(brain power).  But, do look up words or other references (eg. to history or literature) you might know.

Complete the glossing for our poems - and have them in class Monday:

    • "I'm a Stranger Here"
    • "In the Year 2525"
    • "Signs, Signs"
    • "High Heels"
***Also make sure to have a printed copy of your poem for our Poetry Slam on Tuesday and Wednesday.  I am hoping we will have some time to rehearse***

Lastly - For Monday - make sure you have finished all the other work (see earlier posts) and I will be collecting:
    • "With His Venom"
PS At the moment there may still be a few of you needing to come in to school on "I" completion day if your past work is not done.

    June 1

Yay!  It is June!  This also means we need to stay focused and use our class time wisely.

Flex this week:  Monday, Tuesday, Thursday

Block 4 - today we finally finished those last 2 genius hour presentations!  (ok... almost) We will need to finish QiYang and Casey's demo on Thursday morning as we will have an awards assembly tomorrow.

Block 1:  For tomorrow - reminder pages 4-8 of your poetry booklet should be completed by Tuesday.

Both blocks:  Upload on to your new group blogs (in the sidebar):

    1. Pics of your Religions Graphic Organizer and pictures of your Renaissance Organizer
    2. Either write (post) or give oral reflections (see directions/questions below) - through video or audio files that you can upload.

    Directions / Reflection Questions:
Tell your audience the purpose/intention of these 2 very different uses for Graphic organizers.

For the Religion poster - Reflect and Review

    • 2 Stars - what 2 things did you do well.  Be specific and refer to your poster and their purposes - how it is to be used.
    • 1 Wish - what is one thing you would do differently to improve upon this assignment - explain your reasoning (why)
For your Renaissance poster - Reflect and Review

Self assess - based on the purpose/intentions of the graphic organizer, criteria, and expectations discussed and shown with samples, what letter grade would you assign yourself?  Explain.

What did you learn from these two assignments?  What are you most proud of?

    Due - Thursday June 4

    Did you remember to ...

    Finish Your Genius Hour posting?

Share the video of our North Surrey Hip hop Dance teacher?

Plan for Friday May 29 - Note Blocks 4 and 1 are doing different things

Block 4:  Introduction to Poetry and our upcoming Poetry Slam!
We have been talking a lot about our first ever grade 8 Poetry Slam on the last 2 days of school and here are some things to watch and discuss to get a better understanding of the difference between giving a literary reading and other forms of public speaking.

True Slam Poetry must be original creations and the poems are written in a way that is meant to be performed.  For our event - you may find and choose a poem to recite or you may challenge yourself to write your own to share!  Below are videos and references to start you off.  Time to get excited!  Celebrate the end of your gr 8 year!

Start by watching some samples from the National Poetry in Voice Competition for gr 9-12 students - some of you may wish to enter this next year.  Emphasis is on the expressive readings of poetry to evoke emotion and convey the feelings/meaning behind the poems that are chosen.  You do not need to overact - it is about using your voice, face, body to express to the audience.

These poems were on a list for the Poetry in Voice Competition, but you may choose your own poems.  We want to avoid repetition and your poem choice will need approval by Ms Lees next week - Wed/Thur double block.

"Constantly Risking Absurdity" (#15) by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

"It Couldn't Be Done" by Edgar Guest

You may also want to write and share your own poem! Maybe this Ted video can help you "Become a Slam Poet in 5 Easy Steps"

This teacher's site has some varied examples and tips for writing too!  Raki's Rad Resources

Have a great day and work to finish your Renaissance web over the weekend!

Block 1:  Work time- Renaissance Graphic Organizer Assignment

Have a great day and work to finish your Renaissance web over the weekend!

    Wednesday, May 27, 2015

Help our fellow Surrey School Teacher from North Surrey

Check this out!  If they get 1 million views, she (or they - I am not sure) will get invited to Ellen

Either way - help share and pass around your Social Media.  It is an inspiring fun performance!

Genius Hour Posts - note the change!

Most of you are not yet finished your Genius Hour Process - despite most presentations finishing over a week ago!  Remember - we want to finish strong in Humanities 8 - complete the following survey (instead of emailing me).  Now I have added one more step - share your project process with your parents.  You should be proud of your projects!  Time to show off a little at the end of the year!

Remember... May is our Fraser Heights Blogging Challenge - sharing our learning!
    We are participating!

    May 19-22

I hope you are all enjoying your long weekend!

So, we are getting down to crunch time.  Unlike first semester, there is no extra time at the end of semester to make up missed work. It will be up to you to come to flex when absent or if still behind - as some of you are.  There will also be other interruptions and missed blocks for things like assemblies. We only have 4 weeks and 2 days until regular classes end for the year!  Oh my!

Tuesday:  You will have Ms Saltel as your TOC again.  I will be at a District Department Head meeting for Humanities teachers all day.  Be awesome again for her - she was impressed last time!

The 2 blocks are not in time with each other, so please read carefully.

Block 4:  You still have some Renaissance DVD s to finish.  You will be watching and creating your 3 column notes.

    • finish watching Renaissance Science and Invention DVD
    • watch Renaissance Art, Literature and Music DVD
*This will likely take the full time.  If there is still class time remaining, silent read and make your novel notes.

Block 1:  You will have time to finish the Pathways questions you were assigned last time you saw Ms Saltel.  Additionally, use the time to silent read and make your novel notes.

Ryan and Riya (and anyone else who might be able to help) - please ask if one of you can go down to the library to borrow Laptop 9 to see if you can finish putting together the Western Outsiders movie.

Both Blocks:  Genius Hour Presentations will resume and finish on the double block days!  Any not finished first period, will need to be done at flex time, so be prepared please (no forgotten items, tech that does not work - it should have been tested last week).

Flex Time this week:  Thursday only or email me if you want to come in early (7:30 or later) for Wednesday - Friday.

    Monday, May 11, 2015

    May 11-15

Flex this week: Wednesday for sure, maybe Friday (Other commitments on the other days)

    Wednesday, May 6, 2015

    Computer woes...

My personal computer will be going in for servicing so I will not be as available via email for the next little while.  I will update you when I get it back.

    Monday, May 4, 2015

Change of plans Tuesday - sorry

    Hi everyone,

Sorry I will be home sick again on Tuesday.  Your TOC said you were all so awesome today - worked well and were very welcoming and respectful.  That was great to hear as I am home sick. Thank you!  Keep it up for Tuesday.

This means - the TOC may open for flex but might not.  You can stop buy in the morning to ask them.

It also means that Genius Hour presentations will be delayed a day.  You will be getting an introduction to the Renaissance instead.

Remember thought that the DVD covers and the films need to be finished by Wednesday/Thursday.

Hope to be back by Wednesday, but keep up the good work!

    Ms Lees

PS  Someone emailed me under star streak?  I don't open emails unless I know who they are so can you email me your name please.

    2.  What do you think were your biggest challenges completing the GH project?  What did you learn from them and what would you do differently if you could? Explain with specific reasons and examples.

    Genius Hour Presentations and Flex

    Hi everyone,

I will be open for flex on Monday and before school Tuesday to help answer questions regarding Genius Hour Presentations.  However, I won't be giving you all the answers - you are in charge of this project. You own it.

"If parents [or teachers]  want to give their children a gift, the best thing they can do is to teach their children to love challenges, be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on learning." Carol Dweck

Learning is messy.  Our aim is progress, not perfection.

Some of you are panicking that you are not or did not "do it right".  Each project and presentation will be different as they are based on your interests and skills - my biggest expectation is that you show new learning, growth and have evidence to support.

Just a reminder of my expectations for Genius Hour Process and your end product - these were the steps we followed and now that we are near the end,

    1. Genius Hour Brainstorming
    2. Proposal - with notes from our conferencing.  If this did not get done ages ago in class (February), you were expected to attend flex. If it is not done by now, it is too late for this step.
    3. Log of your process and reflections along the way - don't try to make it up if you have not done so.  May be in many forms -dependent upon your project and how you said you would log your process.  It should include reasons for changes/decisions you made along the way, especially if you deterred greatly from your original proposal.
    4. Peer Review - minimally 2 people (1 from our class) - you were told to ask specific questions and to record responses in some way.
    5. Your presentation - notes, script or other.  Again - will vary dependent upon your project.
    6. Reflections - after your presentations.  I will post reflection questions this week and they will be due (with all your project process in one place) by next Friday (May 8).  This is an opportunity to further demonstrate your learning and your metacognitive (reflective thinking skills).  Even if your project or presentation does not go as planned, you can make up for it here as this is where the depth of your learning can be demonstrated.
Need further encouragement? Consider these articles on a Growth Mindset to better understand why struggle and challenge are important to learning and growth.

Schedule April 27 - April 30 and Genius Hour Presentation Info.

    Monday:  Time to finish filming.

Tuesday: time to work on editing and dvd booklets.

Wednesday (1,1) and Thursday (4.4) Double Block Days: Genius Hour Presentations

What you will need:  You cannot print during class time as we will get started right away.

    • printed copy of your proposal (after review and conferencing) - if you did not conference or review with me, why not?  There was time in class and at flex since February.
In preparation:  complete the appropriate survey for your block

    Block 1:  Survey Form

    Block 4: Survey Form

    Question Re:  DVD booklet

Q:  Is the plot synopsis of the book or of our adapted film version.

A:  Both - we want to see how you adapted the book into film.

Eg.  Pony and Johnny run away to hide in the small country town of Windrixville.

Adapted:  In our "Alice in Wonderland version" Pony and Johnny escape through the looking glass to the Mad Hatters' Tea Party.

Alert - Maiya and Insung's Film Production Crew

Sounds like communication breakdown - Brandon, Steven and William

Everyone check your email as there is a google doc for you and don't forget to bring props and costumes.  You will need to work doubly hard to prepare Thursday for filming on Friday - to make it more efficient, make sure to script, rehearse, and make sure you review the criteria/expectations in the rubric.  If you cannot film tomorrow, you can start to work on your dvd cover.  You will need to work together and support each other to finish the scenes.

    Wednesday, April 22, 2015

Thursday April 23 - flex times

Reminder - flex time will be open and you need to check in with a partner to do your peer review for Genius Hour projects.  My intention will be to have presentations starting in the double blocks next Wednesday and Thursday.

    Hum 8 Speechmeet Finalists

    Hi everyone,

So far, congratulations on your hard work all week.  The Humanities teachers and our guest judges of staff and senior students have had nothing but good things to say about your speeches - well done!  We are very proud of you!

Your scores are very close!  I know you are anxious for the list of finalists and sadly, I will have to post on my classroom door and email to your teachers before school.  I was on a fieldtrip and had an appointment after school today,  so the Humanities department did not quite get all the information we needed to narrow our finalists.  Finalists will be posted by 8am and I will ask to put them on the school monitors too.  Sorry for the delay.

In anticipation, I know you should have seen your feedback and scores for each round so if you scored 4.6 or better in both rounds, you may be a finalist.

Get a good night's sleep and come to room 213 in the morning!

We are excited for our final round at lunch in the library - all are welcome!  We only ask if you come to support your friends, you must stay for all speakers so as not to be disruptive.

    Hope to see you there!

7.use transitions-take a rhetorical question and end it with a pause
8.include theatrics-try to make a visual imagine in audiences mind
9,end strong-make a ending your audience will remember
10.keep it short-audiences like a nice short speech they have places they need to be and will probobly get bored so keep it short

Student - Led Conference Prep, Reminders, extra flex time

I know you are all still nervous and anxious about student - led conferences (both those doing them tomorrow at school from 3-6pm and those whose parents have emailed me and will be doing them at home).

When we updated our portfolios and reflections at the end of semester, we included a lot of varied samples.  These will be too many for most of your parents.

You will pull out samples that show growth between term 1 and now in the following areas: (suggestions are in brackets)

    1.  Writing and writing process (paragraph writing, blog posts, speech/scripts for presentation

    2.  Reading Comprehension (Think-Alouds, plot diagrams, story term quiz, questions and
                                                    answers)
Reading analysis  / structure (plot diagrams, character webs, story application test,
                                                    dialectical journals)
          3.  Collaboration skills (group blogs, reflections on architecture projects, innovation fair
                                                  projects, lit circle discussions)

          4.  Religion Presentation as the most recent example of:
      • Oral communication (lit circle discussion reflections/religion project presentation)
      • Representing visually (models, religion project poster)
      • Research skills and note-making - organized and point form – no full sentences, own words, sources indicated.  (sample notes from videos - eg. What is religion, sample notes from note-making booklet, notes from innovation fair research, architecture or religion project process)
*PS - yes, I know there is an extra "1" above - can't seem to get rid of it :(
Essentially you will be discussing and pointing out how your samples show growth in skills and learning intentions (if you are not sure of these - check your portfolio reflection sheets again for hints).  You will be needing to point out and explain:

First:  What you had to do (the task) and why (learning intentions - skills or content) and how you met the expectations/criteria or why you did not meet the expectations or criteria. You may need to explain how you knew what was good work for the task (eg. samples in class, rubrics, looking at and critiquing together in class, reviewing in class, etc.)

Then:  what you need to do to improve and how you will do this in the last terms of the year

Ms Lees - I am freaking out a little (or a lot) how will I get this all done?

Extra times available tomorrow - before school at 7:15 (Pocock is here earlier if I am late) and at lunch flex.

Religion Mini-Unit (calendar before spring break)

World Religions Unit & what we are doing up to spring break:

    Introduction:  (Last week)

Brainstorming on charts - what do we know, think we know and want to know (questions) about varied religions and religion in general.

We watched "What is religion?" DVD - you should have made notes in a T-chart on this with main ideas on the left and details on the right.  If you struggled with this, you may wish to watch again (this may be a sample of your note-making skills for your portfolio).

    Wed / Thurs this week:

Building some common background knowledge:  forming a basic understanding of some of the main features of the world's main religions - Religions Booklet.  Having to use real BOOKs for research too!  Booklet will be collected on Tuesday but you will not have more class time after today and yesterday.

Friday and Tuesday:   Interims and starting mini-project

Mini - Project:    (in preparation to share with parents at student-led-conferences)

***See sidebar to the right for links to the project description***

Learning Intentions:  The "why's" behind the "what" we are studying and doing

    • Research skills - including note-making (organized in a way that you were taught!)
    • Visual Representation (communication skills) "old-school" and on paper! - Emphasis on representing your information with images, key words only and organized on a graphic organizer of your choice (choose one that best suits your topic
    • Independent or Collaborative skill building - dependent partly on your performances in the last group project.  You get to choose to work alone or with a partner.
    • Oral Presentation - formally presenting and using your graphic organizer as a visual aid to enhance what you say.  This may require you to write a speech! You will also be sharing these with your parents! (Student - led conferences next week on Wednesday)
    • Reflections and self/peer assessment.  (Learning to give and receive constructive feedback).
Monday - Cleaning up portfolios (narrow focus for student-led conferences, opportunity to show improvement since report card (end of Jan).

Tuesday - last day to work on Visual aid for your religion project

Wed / Thurs, Friday - Genius Hour!!!  While you work on Genius Hour, I will call you up for sharing your religion projects with me :)  Unless you want to film your presentation to your parents and post on the class blog?  We can discuss in class.

Spring Break!!!  Woo Hoo!  Enjoy, rest up and come back re-energized to work till the end of the year :)

Hmmm - trouble using books ?

Thinking of you all  - noticed some of you very frustrated with having to use real books this week.  Kind of a scary thought!   :)

Now to continue enjoying the power of "book books" !

And if you need reminders, here is the Medieval Help Desk for you:

I'm not sure if we're supposed to or allowed to use a different cite for the bibliography but my pictures weren't working so I found a different cite for it. If easybib doesn't work for you guys either here's the link for the other cite.

    Hi everyone,

Reminders:  if you need time to work with your group to finish your presentation / rehearse, etc. then I will open the room at 7:15 am Tuesday and Tuesday at lunch (I will be in and out - busy but you may gather and work responsibly).

    Flex time:  Thursday this week.

Presentations for your Architecture project are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

Tuesday - at your request, we will take a break from project work and have an introduction to World religions Tuesday in class.  (Sadly Genius Hour postponed again).

Goal is to finish with these presentations and have no homework for your long weekend.

If you were absent, communicate with your group.

Semester 2 week 1: Architecture Projects, portfolios and more...

    Good morning,

This week we are working primarily on your architecture projects.  Class time will be used for building/constructing and planning your presentations.  All of your individual research and note making should be completed by now.  On Friday, I will show you how to put your resources into a proper MLA bibliography.

There are a few of you who did not finish your portfolios - you must attend flex on Wednesday and Thursday to finish them off or you will receive an "I" this term.

Flex this week will be open Thursday for all.  Wednesday - only those who need to finish portfolios - quiet working as I will also be having a meeting in the room with another group of students.

Architecture presentations will be next week on the double block days.  However you will not get any more class time after this week to put together your presentations/structures.

Genius Hour Project Proposal Revisions - last day will be Friday if you are planning any changes.

    Humanties Portfolios

    Hi everyone,

Most of you have been in to finish your portfolios and conference with me.  If you have an appointment time with me tomorrow already, I look forward to seeing you then.  However, if you have been ill or not able to come in yet, I will see you next week in Semester 2 term 3 to finish.  I need the remainder of the time tomorrow and Friday for Law 12 presentations, department meetings and prepping for semester 2 courses.

Enjoy Family Day with your family!

Next week you will have the whole week to work on your architecture projects - bring supplies, research and computers or devices as needed.  I will also try to book some for our use.  Why you ask? because you will be building your structure as part of your project but the other part is planning and preparing you presentation!  Yay!

See you Tuesday - except for the few students who have already scheduled time to come in with me.  Eric C - hope you feel better soon.  Try not to stress about your portfolio.

Everybody, let's start semester two healthy and happy!  Also don't forget about our new waste disposal and recycling program starting on Monday.

    Hum 8 Portfolio conferences

Reminder to show up 30 minutes before your conference time to attach your work to your reflections.  Below are photos of the conferences booked as of Friday afternoon.  If you are still working on your reflections, come in any time and then sign up for your conference after you finish your reflections.

*Don't forget to bring your work habit checklist and your binder - to put your work back in.*

You may also come in to study if you need a place to work with your peers - as long as it is quiet study.  Prepare the night before - pencil case/supplies, books to return, eat and sleep well, bring a water bottle for during the exam too.  Good luck on your exams!

Semester 1: final week of classes

This week is the last one before end of semester.  After Monday, we will take a break from your architecture project to get your reflections, self-assessments and goal setting done for your conferences next week.  This means, unless you have fallen behind in your work, you should not have homework this week as we will work on it all in class.  Study for your end of semester exams, eat well and sleep well so that you can perform well.  Also - restock your pencil case with extra pens, pencils, erasers and any other item you may need for your finals (e.g.. calculator, ruler,…).

Monday - we will be working on your architecture project in class.

Tuesday - Friday: Bring your binder.  Be prepared for some messiness as you look back through past work and select pieces that you think demonstrate your growth and abilities.

***The reason we will spend a lot of time setting up your portfolios now is because you will be running student-led conferences just before spring break on March 4. It is also important for you individual growth to have time to reflect and assess what you have done, where you want to go and plan for how you will get there.***

By Friday you will have signed up for a 10 minute conference time slot on Monday - Tuesday mornings from 8 am -11:30 am next week.  You may only sign up for a time slot once your portfolio and the reflections are completed satisfactorily.

Flex times Hum 8:  Tues, Wed and Friday this week

Course Selection, Innovation Fair Prep and HW Reminders

    Hi everyone,

Thank you Block 1 for being so great for Mr Hoskin today!  I hear you all worked really well together and I am looking forward to reading your revised paragraphs.

Block 1: Course Selection Fair Post  - due Friday on your group blogs

Today your task was to peruse some of the options available in grade 9-12 as electives.  Now you are to post 3 elective courses you might be interested in the future, why are you interested and where or who can you see for more information?
(PS  You don't need to feign interest in Law 12 or PDD 9-12…. Unless of course you are truly interested in the fabulous courses that they are ;)

Block 4:  reminder that tomorrow I expect you to be superb for my TOC as I am away at a a district meeting.  Flex time tomorrow will not be available unless you ask the TOC and she allows it.  If you need a space and quiet to work, try the LST room at 11:30.  They are open for everyone.

Thursday (tomorrow), you will be spending a lot of your time in class on your written paragraphs (narrative, persuasive, explanatory, and descriptive).  Ensure that you have all your process with you (brainstorming, outlines and rough draft).

Good copies of all your work will be stapled in separate booklets and handed in on Friday.  Good copies should be written in blue or black ink or typed.  Remember - we do not have printing at school so make sure if you type you are able to print at home - if your printer runs out of ink or is not working,  write or print out by hand.

Both Blocks:  Innovation Fair starts on Friday!
                                   It is finally here!!!

What do you need to bring and be prepared to do?

    1.  Bring your Humanities binder with work to hand in.
    2.  Bring your approved Innovation Fair Proposal and any materials you may need to begin working.  Yes, you may need to bring your own technology.  We will have access to some, but it may be limited.

Friday - assembly for course selection and Innovation Fair Showcase Skills.  Pay attention to both!

    Gr 8s - block 3 (9:40)
    Gr 9s - block 1 (12:10)

    See you Friday!
